Anchee Min's Katherine: A Lesson In Survival Conceived in Shanghai, China, in 1957, under the standard of Chairman Mao, ChinaÃ¢â¬â¢s socialist pioneer, Anchee Min followed the lessons of Mao (Book Reporter). In 1974, she worked at a work camp for quite a while. In 1984, she came to America, and by 1994 her diary, Red Azalea, turned into a global success (book coat). At the work camp, Zebra finds that she is conveying the offspring of the man that mishandled her. With ChinaÃ¢â¬â¢s exacting thoughts on a pregnant w omanÃ¢â¬â¢s existence without marriage, Ã¢â¬Å"In China, any lady who got pregnant before marriage demolished her futureÃ¢â¬ (82), ZebraÃ¢â¬â¢s powerful urge not to endure Mr.

Asking a group of people, even strangers, for advice can provide a great variety of helpful ideas. But what about when advice is offered when you didnât ask for it? New mothers, college students, and people who work with the public may be more prone to getting unsolicited advice from friends, family, or strangers, but most of us experience it at times. And it doesnt always feel helpful. Unsolicited advice has the potential to create stress.?? Often it can feel like criticism more than support when someone offers their take on what you could be doing better.?? (Sometimes theyre not judging, and its our own defensiveness thats making the advice feel like criticism, and other times they are absolutely judging us and our feelings are spot-on.) The stress can be compounded if the advice-giver takes offense if their advice isnt welcomed and followed. When the advice doesnt feel right to you, this can put you in a difficult position and create frustration and even resentment on both sides. People who offer unsolicited advice may have pure motives (though this isnt always the case), but it doesnt always feel helpful. Understanding their motives, however, can be helpful. People give advice for many reasons, some of which are well-intentioned, others less so. It can be confusing knowing what to do with all the types of unsolicited advice that we encounter, so it helps to examine where the words might be coming from. Here are some common reasons people are compelled to give unsolicited advice. Helpful Motives Altruism: Often people offer advice just because of the simple reason that they think they can help you, and they want to make your life easier. Whatever the case, their motives are altruistic. Perhaps thereâs something they know of that they think would work perfectly with your situation or personality, and they would love to hook you up with something that would improve your life or reduce your stress. Particularly if you are talking to them about a problem, even if youre just needing some validation or emotional support, people may assume you are looking them for answers, and might also be feeling pressure to supply those answers.Friendliness: Sometimes unsolicited advice is offered by a stranger as a way to start a conversation. It can also be offered by a friend to perhaps forge a connection. Friends often assume they can help you by offering you a solution, even if you didnt ask for one. This type of advice is well-meaning and can often be helpful.Excitement: Other times, un solicited advice comes from those who have found something that works for them, and they want to share it with the world. They see your situation as a perfect fit for this new product, tool or piece of wisdom thatâs made their life so much better, and wish someone had told them about it sooner, so they share. Its also common for people who have faced the same challenges as you and found what was a great solution for them to want to share this solution, assuming their answer will affect you the same way. Whether or not the advice fits with your values or specific situation, this type of advice generally feels good to get. Less Helpful Motives Needing to Be Needed: People who offer unsolicited advice from this motivation may have a lot of knowledge in a certain area that pertains to your situation and? they feel the need to share it with people in order to feel valued, powerful, and important.??Feeling Helpless: If youâre sharing your feelings and frustrations with them, some people may want to help you and be trying to solve your problem for you as a way to help. If thatâs what you were looking for, great. But if you just wanted a supportive ear or a little validation, sometimes people canât tell the difference and offer advice instead. Theyâre Sick of Hearing It: If you routinely share your problems and feelings with people as a way of venting, but take no steps toward solving your own dilemmas, letâs face it: even if they know that you just want to talk, they could be trying to get you to do something constructive rather than continually emoting. This only applies to some unsolicited advice situations, and , looking inward, youâll know if this applies to you.Narcissism: Some people, particularly those with narcissistic tendencies, need to be in the role of âteacherâ virtually all of the time, or perhaps just like to hear themselves pontificate. Their advice is often long-winded and not always appropriate to your situation, but about them more than any commentary on you.?? These people often cant imagine that their advice wont be the answer youre looking for, even if it doesnt fit your situation. This type of advice, though generally harmless, can feel less helpful, and is sometimes relevant to your situation, but often not. Much Less Helpful Motives Establishment of Dominance: Some advice-givers would like to take the role of âmore knowledgeable personâ in the relationship dynamic, and giving advice puts them in that position.??Passing Judgment: Sometimes when people have seen something in you that they donât like, they give unsolicited advice as a way to change it. This advice can often feel like an insult more than a genuine attempt to help.The desire for Drama: Believe it or not, some people love conflict, love hearing themselves argue, and get a feeling of personal power from telling others how wrong they are.?? Such people, consciously or unconsciously, tend to give lots of advice as a way of bringing up topics to debate. This type of advice has more to do with the advice-giver than with you, and it can sometimes feel like a subtle snub or a slap in the face, and leave you with an uneasy feeling, even if you donât know why. Once youâve thought about where advice can come from and examine your own thoughts and feelings to see if perhaps youâre being overly sensitive, you can better know how to handle unsolicited advice.

Numerous factors have been studied to account for different parenting styles and practices globally. The attitude and response of parents to various parenting practices is based on the knowledge or information they are exposed to or available to them. This study intends to examine the influence of education on parentÃ¢â¬â¢s involvement in raising their children especially outside of school. Quantitative method will be utilized based on the secondary data from national survey of parents. LITERATURE REVIEW Parent education probably began with the first grandmother in the cave telling her daughter how to care for a newly arrived infant. One of the relevant biblical quotes Ã¢â¬Å"Thou shalt teach ... diligently unto thy childrenÃ¢â¬ (King James Bible).Ã¢â¬ ¦show more contentÃ¢â¬ ¦2008). Research on parenting also has shown that parent education is related to a warm, social climate in the home. Shumow and Miller (2001) described parental home involvement as those conversations between parent and child that focused on school experiences, while school involvement was conceptualized as parentsÃ¢â¬â¢ availability for contact with the school. Epstein and Sanders (2002) looked at both direct behaviors, such as attending parent teacher conferences, and indirect behaviors, such as sharing educational expectations with the child. Research indicates that home involvement had greater impact on academic achievement (VanVoorhis, 2003), while regular parent-child discussions about school and expectations had the greatest impact on educational outcomes of adolescents, including truancy and dropping out (McNeal, 1999). Klebanov et al. (1994) found that both mothersÃ¢â¬â¢ education and family income were important predictors of the physical environment and learning experiences in the home but that mothersÃ¢â¬â¢ education alone was predictive of parental warmth. In Greek mythology, Eros is the god of love and beauty. When one falls in love, fate falls into the hands of this saintly figure. Many people fail to notice the presence of Eros, and both Robert BridgesÃ¢â¬â¢ poem Ã¢â¬Å"Ãâ¢Ã ¡Ã ©Ã £Ã¢â¬ and Anne StevensonÃ¢â¬â¢s poem Ã¢â¬Å"ErosÃ¢â¬ focus on this forgotten god. Despite the focus of each poem being centered on Eros, Bridges uses literary techniques such as metaphor, elated language, and poem structure to enforce the idea that Eros is a dictator over human emotions, while Stevenson creates the notion that Eros is a slave to humansÃ¢â¬â¢ desire for love by using metaphor, poem structure, diction, and dialogue. The visual images of Eros described in each poem convey a drastically different type of god. Justice Is Not For All Throughout the course of history, mankind has learned many things, and has continually strived in running the race towards the prize that has been set out for them. Its undeniable that at times we do a great job, lighting the future with hope. However, other times the path ahead of us seems only to be filled with darkness. This impression could be given through many of todays undisputable facts. Quite unfortunately, justice is not for all. Harper Lees novel, To Kill A Mocking Bird; the documentary, Eyes on the Prize: Education at Little Rock; Anthony Burns by Virginia Hamilton; and the certain poems all illustrate this fact. In the view of Harper Lee, justice is a simple concept. To recognize the difference between justice and injustice does not take any special degree of wisdom or sophistication, as shown by Scout, our narrator. In fact, the learned members of the community- such as the judge and prosecutor- and the proudly religious Baptists who are spectators at the trial are, willingly or not, allied with the machinery of injustice. The title this novel is a key to some themes. It is first explained in Chapter 10, at the time that Scout and Jem Finch have just received air rifles for Christmas. Atticus tells his children that it is a sin to shoot a mockingbird. Later Miss Maudie explains to the children what Atticus meant: Mockingbirds are harmless creatures that do nothing but sing for our enjoyment. Therefore, it is very wrong to harm them. It is easy to see that the mockingbird in this story is Tom Robinson- a harmless man who becomes a victim of racial prejudice and injustice. Like the mockingbird, Tom has never done wrong to anyone. Even the jurors who sentence him to death have nothing personal against him. They find him guilty mostly because they feel that to take the word of a black man over two whites would threaten the system they live under, the system of segregation. Tom himself is guilty of nothing but being in the wrong place at the wrong time. To Kill a Mockingbird contains criticism of the prejudice and moral laziness that allowed Southern society to have a double standard of justice. Boo Radley, the eccentric recluse in To Kill a Mocking Bird is another harmless creature who becomes a victim of cruelty. Here again, the author seems to be emphasizing the universality of human nature. Tom Robinson's problems may be bound up with the complex social problem of racial prejudice, but any neighborhood can have its Boo Radley, all but forgotten except as the subject of gossip and rumor. By the final chapters of the novel, we learn that good and justice do not necessarily triumph every time. Harmless individuals such as Tom Robinson and Boo Radley can become victims through no fault of their own. And sometimes the system can do nothing to defend them. Boo Radleys situation is similar to that of the man in the poem A Negro Labourer in Liverpool. I stared; Our eyes met But on his dark Negro face No sunny smile, No hope or a longing for a hope promised; Only the quick cowed dart of eyes Piercing through impassive crowds Searching longingly for a face That might flicker understanding Tragic, isnt it? A man comes from his motherland with new hope, only to be disappointed. No one cares, and his hope lies in the shovel. In Hamiltons novel, Anthony Burns, the same injustice is evident throughout. He cant get away, thought, yknow. He cant escape the fate hes born to, was the statement made regarding Anthony Burns, the fugitive slave, and the hero of the book. He, like his Negro slave family of 14 children, and like countless other Negroes in the 1800s were born into injustice and cruelty. He was whipped and half starved to death in the early parts of his life, and was unable to even enjoy some of lifes simplest things, which many of us take for granted. Did he do anything to deserve it? No. Later Burns escaped slavery by fleeing to the Boston, where slavery had already been abolished. However, his freedom is short-lived.
